The Dow Jones futures are in full drama mode today.
Kind of like the soap opera, but with stock charts. We’re talking sharp swings, global tension, and big bank earnings sending mixed signals.
If you’re trying to figure out where the Dow is headed, you’re not alone. Wall Street is just as confused.
Here’s the full picture of what’s going on with the Dow Jones today, April 11, 2025.
From +400 to -300 to +230… in One Day
If you checked Dow futures this morning and smiled, only to frown by lunch and then grin again by late afternoon, you’re not imagining things.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures shot up 400 points after the market opened, had tumbled 300 points by midday, and have since bounced back +230 points and counting.
That kind of movement doesn’t happen unless something big is brewing.
China’s 125% Tariff Bombshell
China just slapped a 125% tariff on a wide range of US goods, effective April 12.
It is a direct response to President Trump’s earlier 145% tariff hike, which is a serious escalation in the ongoing US-China trade war.
This kind of tariff tension hits Dow-listed companies hard. This includes industrial giants like Caterpillar and 3M, export-heavy stocks like Boeing, and consumer names with Chinese exposure like Apple (which impacts Nasdaq too, but still ripples across the Dow).
Big Banks Add Fuel to the Fire
While geopolitical tensions took the headlines, US bank earnings also played a role in the Dow’s wild ride.
JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley posted solid Q1 results, which helped the Dow initially rally.
But Wells Fargo was disappointing, especially on net interest income, which dragged sentiment down midday.
The Dow includes JPMorgan, so its positive earnings helped offset some of the day’s anxiety, but not all of it.
There are Three Things Involved
With global headlines moving markets by the hour, it’s tough to make firm predictions. But here’s what we know:
Volatility is back, so expect wild intraday swings to continue. Trade headlines matter and any new comment from Washington or Beijing could flip the market. Company earnings will drive direction; as more Dow-listed companies report, expect fresh reactions.
